NDIS funding for mobility equipment

About NDIS

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) provides funding and support to eligible Australians with disability to help them pursue their goals, increase their independence and participate in everyday life.

Assistive technology can form part of an NDIS plan where it meets the NDIS funding requirements and relates to a participant's disability and support needs.

Motobility is a registered NDIS provider. Our experienced team can help participants, families and healthcare professionals explore suitable mobility equipment, arrange product demonstrations and trials, and provide quotes and product information to support the process.

Am I eligible for the NDIS?

To access the NDIS, you must meet the NDIS eligibility requirements.

These include:

  • being younger than 65 when you apply

  • meeting Australian residency requirements

  • meeting the NDIS disability requirements, early intervention requirements, or both.

Eligibility is determined by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA), not Motobility.

If you're unsure whether you may be eligible, you can contact the NDIS or an NDIS partner for further information.

What is assistive technology?

Assistive technology (AT) is equipment or technology that can help a person do things they may otherwise be unable to do, or make tasks easier or safer because of their disability.

Depending on your individual needs and NDIS plan, assistive technology may include mobility equipment such as:

  • manual and powered wheelchairs

  • powerchairs

  • mobility scooters

  • walking and mobility aids

  • adjustable beds and positioning equipment

  • lift and recline chairs

  • other eligible assistive technology

Not every product is suitable or fundable for every participant. NDIS funding depends on your individual circumstances, disability-related needs, plan and the applicable NDIS funding requirements.

What does “NDIS” mean on a Motobility product?

You may see NDIS information displayed on some products on the Motobility website.

This may include an NDIS Support Item Reference Number or other information to help participants, families, plan managers and healthcare professionals identify where a product may fit within the NDIS.

Displaying NDIS information or a Support Item Reference Number does not mean a product will automatically be funded or approved by the NDIS.

Whether an item can be purchased using NDIS funding depends on the participant's individual circumstances, plan, available funding and the applicable NDIS requirements.

How does NDIS funding for assistive technology work?

The process varies depending on the type, cost and complexity of the equipment.

Low-cost assistive technology

Low-cost assistive technology is generally equipment costing less than $1,500. If you have appropriate funding available in your plan, you may be able to purchase eligible low-cost AT without first providing a quote to the NDIA.
Some higher-risk items may still require professional advice to make sure they are safe and appropriate for you.

Mid-cost assistive technology

Mid-cost assistive technology generally costs between $1,500 and $15,000.
Written evidence or advice may be required to demonstrate that the equipment is suitable for your needs. The requirements depend on the equipment and your individual circumstances.

High-cost assistive technology

High-cost assistive technology costs more than $15,000 and requires NDIA approval before it can be purchased using NDIS funding.
An assessment and supporting evidence from an appropriately qualified assistive technology assessor will generally be required.

Do I need an Occupational Therapist?

It depends on the type and complexity of the equipment.

Some assistive technology can be purchased without a formal assessment, while other equipment requires advice, supporting evidence or an assessment from an appropriately qualified professional.

For more complex mobility equipment, your Occupational Therapist or other healthcare professional may assess your functional needs and help identify appropriate equipment.

Where professional input is required, Motobility can work alongside your healthcare professional during product selection, demonstrations and trials.

Can I choose where I buy my equipment?

This depends on how your NDIS funding is managed.

NDIA-managed

NDIA-managed supports generally need to be purchased from registered NDIS providers.

Plan-managed

Participants can generally choose registered or unregistered providers for applicable supports, with their plan manager managing payments and claims.

Self-managed

Participants can generally choose registered or unregistered providers for applicable supports and manage their NDIS funding and claims themselves.

Motobility is a registered NDIS provider, so we can work with NDIA-managed, plan-managed and self-managed participants for the supports we are registered to provide.
